Deutsche Bahn and it’s partners have developed an innovative diesel-electric hybrid traction system called ECO-Train.
To test the system an electrical multiple unit of the type Desiro VT 642 of the Erzgebirgsbahn in Germany has been converted into hybrid technology by ABB AG.
Two key components have been delivered by VEM namely the permanent-magnet generator as well as the traction motors.
Li-Ion-accumulators installed in the train can provide electrical energy or store braking energy.
Thanks to that innovative system the train can operate temporarily in full electrical mode while the diesel-engine can be deactivated.
In this way VEM contributes to sustainability in rail transport.
